ISAVFT 2024: Networking and knowledge exchange at the highest level

The International Symposium on Aerodynamics, Ventilation and Fire in Tunnels (ISAVFT) took place in Copenhagen from 28 to 30 October 2024, and we are delighted that two of our colleagues – Sander Wirth (Group Manager Tunnel & Metro Systems) and Jonas Flatter (Application and Sales Engineer) – had the opportunity to attend.

ISAVFT provides an important platform for experts, researchers and professionals to discuss current challenges and advances in tunnel engineering. The symposium focuses on aspects such as aerodynamics, ventilation and fire protection in tunnels, which are essential components of modern infrastructure. In addition to lectures from prestigious keynote speakers, the event provides an opportunity to discuss operating experience, maintenance issues and system failures as well as findings from tunnel fires and similar incidents.

Thanks to the invitation of our partner company Mosen Ltd. and in particular the support of Fathi Tarada (Managing Director), we were able to be directly represented at ISAVFT and thus had the opportunity to engage in personal dialogue with potential customers and experts. “It was impressive to see how many innovative approaches were presented here. The discussions were not only informative, but also inspiring for our future projects,” says S. Wirth.

S. Wirth and J. Flatter took the opportunity to hold in-depth discussions with potential customers and industry experts. Particularly noteworthy was the exchange with tunnel and motorway operators as well as global design offices. Of particular interest were the upcoming comparative measurements of conventional jet fans and MoJets in a new tunnel in Switzerland early next year.

The visit was an excellent opportunity for us to gain insights into current industry trends, make valuable contacts and strengthen existing partnerships. We look forward to incorporating the knowledge gained and new ideas into our current and future projects.

Review of the Maintenance trade fair

From February 21-22, 2024, we, from the Service and Power business segment, took part in Maintenance in Dortmund for the first time with a young, dynamic team as one of over 200 exhibitors in a year in which record attendance figures were reported!

This is Germany’s largest network on the topic of maintenance trade fairs.

The companies presented the latest technologies, from AI controlled predictive maintenance solutions to innovative IoT applications. –  Maintenance

In addition to their role as exhibitors, our colleagues also had the opportunity to get an idea of the exhibitors as visitors and find new products that make everyday work on the construction site easier. The exchange with the Fraunhofer Institute on the topic of additive manufacturing, which we are already working on internally in order to be able to offer further repair options in the future, was also valuable.

The interactive workshops and presentations provided insights into the future of maintenance and opened up opportunities for cross-industry cooperation. – Maintenance

We were able to make many new contacts, including potential new customers and interested parties from various sectors who shared specific problems and needs with us. The main topics of interest to our customers are wear protection, aerodynamic measurements and the resulting upgrade options.

The topic of AI in the field of maintenance is also becoming increasingly present, as we could see from both the presentations and the large number of exhibitors.

Maintenance is a major topic of sustainability, which is also becoming more and more present due to emerging laws and obliges many companies to prove this in the future. The Fraunhofer Institute is also currently asking itself what sustainability looks like in a manufacturing company and how it can be “measured”.

We are excited about further developments in these areas and are already looking forward to them to representing TLT-Turbo again next year.

Visit of the Rhineland-Palatinate FDP Parliamentary Group to TLT-Turbo in Zweibrücken

As part of the annual summer tour of the Rhineland-Palatinate FDP parliamentary group, FDP delegates led by Justice Minister Herbert Mertin, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group Philipp Fernis, Deputy Parliamentary Group Chairwoman Cornelia Willius-Senzer, Deputy Parliamentary Group Chairman Steven Wink, and State Secretary of Justice Matthias Frey visited TLT-Turbo at its Zweibrücken site. The summer tour takes place every year in the first week of the parliamentary summer recess and enables the members of parliament to come into direct contact with companies and social institutions throughout Rhineland-Palatinate. Each day of the tour is concluded with a public event.

Part of the FDP delegates together with representatives of TLT-Turbo, f.l.t.r.: Matthias Kraemer, Dr. Sebastian Fleder, Florian Neff, Marco Weber, Philipp Fernis, Herbert Mertin, Matthias Adamy, Cornelia Willius-Senzer, Matthias Frey, Steven Wink

Mr. Zhao briefly welcomed our guests and kicked off the event. Thereafter, Mr. Adamy introduced the company and provided information about our product range and application areas, our international locations and our corporate structure – also with regards to PowerChina and the cooperation.

Besides a general introduction of the company, Mrs. Pirmann reported on HR issues, especially on the topic of visa procedures – an important issue for us when sending employees abroad or to us in Germany. She gave three examples of the many challenges and hurdles involved in these processes. The delegates showed great interest in these first-hand reports, and a lively discussion ensued on possible improvements and offers of assistance. In this context, Steven Wink (Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Group) offered his support in protracted cases.

Dr. Fleder reported on the challenges of obtaining funding for research projects. Although Zweibrücken is classified as a “structurally weak region”, which would suggest that obtaining funding would be easier, he explained that this is not the case. He outlined different funding options, while emphasizing the many hurdles that must be overcome along the way. Despite the options available, the application process is often tedious, time-consuming, and unfortunately, often with little chance of success. The presentation led to a lively discussion in which it was hoped that bureaucratic hurdles would be removed and that digitization would be promoted in order to facilitate access to funding in the future.

The visit also included a tour of our site, led by Mr. Neff:

This included a presentation of our test stands in the test hall and the various test procedures that are conducted. Next up was the Blue Hall where Mr. Herz presented the MoJet fan. A fog machine was used to fill the hall with smoke to demonstrate the MoJet’s rapid
extraction. This not only illustrated the performance of the fan, but also provided a clear visualization of the airflow lines.

At the end of the event, Philipp Fernis, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group, expressed his gratitude on behalf of all delegates for the warm welcome and the informative presentation of the company’s activities. The delegates were especially impressed by the demonstration of the MoJet and the presentation of one of our products in action. We were also pleased with the visit of the FDP delegates and are confident that this paved the way for future effective political contacts.

Promoting young talent with StudiumPlus

TLT-Turbo in Bad Hersfeld places emphasis on dual study program

Bad Hersfeld. Three generations of StudiumPlus – This is what you will find at TLT-Turbo, one of the world’s leading suppliers of technologically advanced industrial fans and ventilation systems, at the company location Bad Hersfeld. Roman Lenk, Head of Logistics, is a StudiumPlus graduate in Management and Logistics, and both he and the company are very impressed with the StudiumPlus program. Milena Fladung and Alea Wolf, both StudiumPlus graduates, work with Lenk in the company’s logistics department. Roman Lenk is convinced: “With the dual study program, we can develop specialists who will stay with the company in the long term.”

Lenk himself is the best proof of this: in 2013, he started his bachelor’s degree at the partner company TLT-Turbo in Bad Hersfeld as the company’s first dual student. After completing his studies, he stayed with the company and in 2020 took over as head of the logistics department with 21 employees. “If I hadn’t already gotten to know the company so well during my studies, I wouldn’t have been able to take on this position so quickly,” Lenk says.

As one of its tasks is to promote young talent, TLT-Turbo has sent Milena Fladung, the next student, to the Bad Hersfeld campus. The 21-year-old was intensively supervised by Lenk during her project phases in the company, graduated as best of her year and has now taken over the process and project management for the logistics department. She is also the process owner for a new IFS implementation, “a very important interface”, as Lenk points out. Alea Wolf also sits in the office with the two of them. The 22-year-old is now in her fourth semester of studying Logistics Management and is once again being mentored by Ms Fladung.

“This is a good example of how a company can work together with StudiumPlus over a longer period of time to specifically develop junior staff,” Campus Director Prof. Dr. Fabian Tjon says. It is not important to send students every year, but to send them when you need a specialist or manager in your company.

Roman Lenk agrees: “We don’t train en masse, but in a very targeted way, and during the project phases we look to see which area the student is best suited for.” Offering prospects and a future in the company is one of the key factors in retaining young talent. The large network of StudiumPlus, with around 1,000 partner companies, is also of interest to TLT-Turbo, even if it does not send students every year. “In addition, the cooperation with StudiumPlus and thus with the is very positive for the company’s image,” he is convinced.

Milena Fladung and Alea Wolf both appreciate the fact that the company had a precise plan for their practical phases – and that they got to know it from the ground up. “I started in the warehouse, got to know the employees and quickly felt part of the team,” Wolf says. Now she appreciates the fact that she can not only continue to accompany her practical projects, but also work on other projects to get to know as many aspects as possible – and that her projects, such as reducing packaging costs, are of great importance to the company. For Roman Lenk, it is essential that the students take on tasks that are actually implemented.

“Many companies don’t take the time to invest in young talent,” Lenk says. At the same time, it is in their own hands to promote young talent in a very targeted way. TLT-Turbo employs StudiumPlus graduates not only in logistics but also in construction. Milena Fladung and Alea Wolf are also enthusiastic about the dual study program. That’s why they both act as school ambassadors. They visit schools to inform them about the opportunities offered by dual study.

TLT-Turbo GmbH is a leading supplier of turnkey ventilation and process fans. Their solutions are used worldwide for conveying air and gases, cooling, smoke extraction, and a variety of other industrial processes. Headquartered in Zweibrücken, Germany, the company employs approximately 380 people, of which approximately 140 are located in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, where the production, logistics, and quality assurance facilities are located.

StudiumPlus is the dual study program of the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen and the Competence Center Duale Hochschulstudien. The program includes a full bachelor’s or master’s degree at Hessen’s largest university of applied sciences, combined with intensive practical experience. The main campus is in Wetzlar, with six other locations, including the Bad Hersfeld campus.
